CSM Worldwide to Report Significant Growth in Foreign-Market Vehicle Production

From 1997 to 2008, automaker home-market vehicle production will stagnate while production in foreign markets will increase substantially, according to CSM Worldwide analysis to be presented May 12 at a CSM conference in Frankfurt, Germany.

For many automakers, their home market - the region where the company is headquartered - has received far less attention than burgeoning global markets since the globalization movement began in the 1990s. Between 1997 and 2008, CSM Worldwide forecasts production volumes in non-home markets will grow 8 million units, from 16.8 million to 25.0 million.

"This production shift has and will continue to have a dramatic impact on suppliers," said Jochen Siebert, director of market assessment services, Europe, for CSM Worldwide. "The automakers usually try to convince key suppliers to support production in foreign regions. Many of these suppliers are more than ready to do so, because they see a stagnation of sales in the home region as well. But suppliers that are not ready to support automakers in more than the home region will face tough times."

Leading the expansion to foreign markets are BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Renault/Nissan and Toyota, according to CSM analysis. Conversely, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat and Volkswagen are among the handful of automakers that will have relatively stable home-market production with little growth abroad through the end of the decade.

CSM Worldwide will discuss this and other topics relevant to the global automobile industry at their conference to be held May 12, 2003, in Frankfurt, Germany. For further information, contact Lenny DeBloem at (32) 10 686 373 or email LennyDeBloem@csmauto.com.
